Belfast's Hidden Gem: Colonial Gables Oceanfront Paradise!

Colonial Gables: Oceanfront Paradise… or is it? (A Brutally Honest Review)

Alright, buckle up buttercups, because I'm about to spill the tea on Colonial Gables Oceanfront Paradise in Belfast. Forget the glossy brochures and generic hotel reviews. This is the real deal, warts and all. And honestly? I'm still sorting out my feelings.

First off, let's get the nitty-gritty out of the way. Accessibility? Mixed bag. They do claim to be wheelchair accessible, and I saw an Elevator and Facilities for disabled guests. However, navigating the place felt a bit like an obstacle course, and I didn't see specific pathways. Definitely call ahead and really grill them about the details if accessibility is crucial for you.

Cleanliness and Safety is where Colonial Gables tries to shine. They tout Anti-viral cleaning products, Daily disinfection in common areas, and a whole host of safety features. I did see a lot of Hand sanitizer stations, and the staff were definitely masked up, giving me confidence. My room definitely felt clean, so that's a plus. Plus, they've got CCTV in common areas and outside the property. Peace of mind is a HUGE thing, especially these days.

Internet? Yeah, they have it. Free Wi-Fi in ALL rooms!. Praise be! And you've got options: Internet access [LAN] and even gasp Internet services. My Wi-Fi was actually pretty solid, allowing me to answer a few emails and watch a movie in my room.

For the Folks Who Like to Eat (and Drink!)

Oh boy, the Dining, drinking, and snacking situation. This is where things get…interesting. They've got Restaurants. Plural! They have a Bar with a Happy hour! And the food descriptions are enticing: Asian cuisine in restaurant, Western cuisine in restaurant, and heck even Vegetarian restaurant! They also promise Breakfast [buffet], Breakfast [buffet] with Asian breakfast, Western breakfast! Plus Coffee/tea in restaurant! And Poolside bar!

Okay, so I'm drooling about the promise of International cuisine and Salad in restaurant, so I decide to head to what appeared to be their main restaurant. Upon arrival I noticed Coffee shop and Desserts in restaurant. This place has it all. As I make my way to my table, I start to see a Buffet in restaurant and I am just overjoyed.

The buffet was… a bit of a roller coaster. The Breakfast [buffet] was fine (the eggs were slightly rubbery), and the Coffee/tea in restaurant was the perfect warm-up. I was disappointed by the Soup in restaurant. The Happy hour made up for it, though. The bartender was amazing, and the drinks were strong. The food? Well, the Desserts in restaurant were AMAZING, I'll give them that. I got a slice of cake with a beautiful cherry on top. It was absolutely perfect.

Things to Do and Ways to Relax… or a Journey for the Soul

Alright, the big draw here: Spa. Spa/sauna! Sauna, Steamroom and Swimming pool [outdoor].

The truth? I went to Body scrub and found myself experiencing pure ecstasy! It was an absolutely amazing and intimate experience. The spa was clean, the staff was friendly and the experience was just perfect.

As I'm walking back to my room after the spa, I start to think, "How can I improve my relaxation?" I decide to check out the Fitness center. After the spa my journey to relaxation and self-improvement has started, so I want to continue.

Well, this fitness center was a joke. Very basic. No Gym/fitness in sight. I did spot a Foot bath and a Pool with view, but after a little while I just decided to head back to my room and check out my Air conditioning.

The Room Itself - My Private Sanctuary

Available in all rooms: Additional toilet, Air conditioning, Alarm clock, Bathrobes, Bathroom phone, Bathtub, Blackout curtains, Carpeting, Closet, Coffee/tea maker, Complimentary tea, Daily housekeeping, Desk, Extra long bed, Free bottled water, Hair dryer, High floor, In-room safe box, Interconnecting room(s) available, Internet access – LAN, Internet access – wireless, Ironing facilities, Laptop workspace, Linens, Mini bar, Mirror, Non-smoking, On-demand movies, Private bathroom, Reading light, Refrigerator, Safety/security feature, Satellite/cable channels, Scale, Seating area, Separate shower/bathtub, Shower, Slippers, Smoke detector, Socket near the bed, Sofa, Soundproofing, Telephone, Toiletries, Towels, Umbrella, Visual alarm, Wake-up service, Wi-Fi [free], Window that opens

Okay, so the room. Mine was… okay. The bed was comfortable, the Blackout curtains were a godsend (trust me, you'll need them after those drinks), and the Free bottled water was a nice touch. The View (oceanfront!) was amazing. It was what sold me, the way the sun glinted off of the sea and the way the waves roared. It was a balm for my soul. I'm not sure what the other rooms are like, but the soundproofing was definitely necessary! Overall, the room was actually fantastic!

Services and Conveniences - The Extras

They offer a bunch of stuff: Concierge, Daily housekeeping, Laundry service, Room service [24-hour]. I used the Room service [24-hour], since I had a late-night craving for a cheesecake. The cheesecake was delicious and the waiter was really friendly, but the room service menu didn't have that many items on it.

The Quirks and the Imperfections (Because Let's be Real)

Okay, here's the honest part. It's not perfect. I had to call for extra towels (twice). The TV remote was an alien device that I never mastered. The music in the common areas was a bizarre mix of elevator muzak and… well, I'm not sure what.

Also, while the staff were friendly, there was a distinct lack of…personality. It felt very chain-hotel-y, not quite the "hidden gem" vibe I was expecting.

My Verdict: To Book or Not to Book?

Look, here's the deal: Colonial Gables Oceanfront Paradise is a decent hotel. It's clean, relatively safe, and has some perks (hello, spa!). It's not the perfect paradise some of the marketing might lead you to believe, and my experience brought me up and down, but it could be a good choice.

Okay, buckle up, buttercups. This isn't your average, sanitized travel brochure. Welcome to my Colonial Gables Oceanfront Village (Belfast, ME, USA) itinerary. Prepare for… well, you'll see. Let's call it "Operation: Lobster Roll and Existential Dread."

Day 1: Arrival and the Tyranny of the Tourist Trap (aka, Lobster Roll Inquisition)

  • 1:00 PM: Arrive at Colonial Gables. Pray the GPS works. Seriously, I've sworn off relying on my phone for directions after that incident in Moab, where I ended up facing a herd of very judgemental llamas. Anyway, first impressions…well, it is charming. Like, aggressively charming. Almost too charming, if you know what I mean. The little white fences, the flowers everywhere… makes you suspicious, ya know?

  • 2:00 PM: Check-in. The woman at the front desk, bless her heart, looks like she’s been running this place since the dawn of time. Probably has. She’s got that look – the one that says, "Another damn tourist. Pray I don't have to deal with your entitled crap." Respect. Key in hand!

  • 2:30 PM: Room exploration. Alright, room's nice. Ocean view? Yes, please! But… the floral wallpaper. Oh, the floral wallpaper. It’s like being trapped inside a particularly aggressive bouquet. I'm going to need a stiff drink later.

  • 3:00 PM: Lobster Roll Reconnaissance. Okay, this is crucial. This trip hinges on the quality of the lobster roll. After a quick Google search I found "The Lobster Shack," a nearby establishment. Gotta scope it out and place an order for my dinner.

  • 4:00 PM: Walk around the town. This place screams "quaint." Cute shops, people waving…I actually kind of hate it, but I'm already feeling better about the oppressive charm.

  • 6:00 PM: The Lobster Roll. This is it. The moment of truth. Chews thoughtfully. Damn. That's the best lobster roll I've ever had. I'm suddenly questioning every life choice I've ever made. So good. The bun is perfect. The lobster…oh, the lobster. It's a revelation. I may cry. I am crying.

  • 7:30 PM: Evening walk on the beach. The wind is a goddamn beast this evening, but the sky is on fire. I love this place, even with the floral wallpaper. This is when I contemplate my life, my purpose, the meaning of lobster.

  • 8:30 PM: Back to the room. More contemplation, more existential dread. And maybe a little Netflix. "Parks and Rec" is my therapy.

Day 2: Coastal Chaos and Artistic Attempts (and the Squirrel's Gambit)

  • 9:00 AM: Breakfast at the little diner down the street. It's called "Mom and Pop's." It's everything I hoped for. Over-easy eggs, crispy bacon, bottomless coffee. This is the good life.

  • 10:00 AM: Coastal Drive. I rented a car. I'm terrible at driving. Pray for me. The coastal scenery is breathtaking. The cliffs plunging to the ocean, the lighthouses standing sentinel… it's just… beautiful. It also makes me intensely aware of my mortality. Lovely.

  • 11:00 AM: Stop at a scenic overlook. Take a picture. It doesn't do it justice. I'm a deeply mediocre photographer. But the view! Oh, the view!

  • 12:00 PM: Lunch break. I packed a sandwich. Ate it on the side of the road. It fell apart. Ants. Ants are everywhere.

  • 1:00 PM: Art Attempt. There's a little art gallery/supply shop in town. I’ve always wanted to paint, you know, be the artistic type. I bought a small watercolor set and tried to capture the ocean. Let's just say my painting looks like a toddler fought a jellyfish. And lost. Spectacularly.

  • 2:00 PM: The Squirrel Incident. I encountered a particularly bold squirrel who tried to steal my sandwich. We had a staredown. The squirrel won.

  • 3:00 PM: Walk the town. I bought a silly postcard from that antique store. Now I'm planning to send it to my mom. I think she'll love it.

  • 4:00 PM: Check out the local bookstore. The smell of old books…pure bliss. Books are my friends. People are…complicated.

  • 6:00 PM: Dinner - another lobster roll, of course.

  • 7:00 PM: Sunset walk on the beach. This place is magic. Feeling more at peace with the universe. Also, the floral wallpaper is less offensive now. Progress!

Day 3: Farewell and Fond (and Slightly Delusional) Memories

  • 9:00 AM: Another breakfast from Mom and Pop's.
  • 10:00 AM: Check out of Colonial Gables. Farewell, floral wallpaper!
  • 10:30 AM: One last stop at The Lobster Shack for the road.
  • 11:30 AM: Final reflections. Colonial Gables…it wasn’t perfect. But it was real. It was beautiful. It had incredible lobster rolls. I might even come back someday.
  • 12:00 PM: Drive away with a full stomach and a slightly lighter heart.

So, there you have it. My imperfect, messy, and thoroughly enjoyable itinerary for Colonial Gables. Hope you enjoyed the ride. And for the love of all that is holy, order the lobster roll. You won't regret it. And if you see a squirrel…well, you're on your own. Good luck. You'll need it.

Colonial Gables: Belfast's Hidden Gem? (More Like a Treasure Chest... Maybe with Some Rust)

Okay, seriously, what IS Colonial Gables? Is it a hotel? A haunted house? A time warp?

Alright, settle down, Sherlock. It's a... let's call it a "charming" seaside lodging. Think old-school Maine, but with a healthy dose of... character. It's not exactly a sleek, modern hotel. More like a collection of cottages and rooms, all cobbled together, facing the gorgeous Penobscot Bay. Haunted? Well, the creaky floorboards and the antique furniture *could* be just that, or maybe it's just the sea air and the fact that the place has been around since, like, the dawn of time. Seriously, I swear I saw a ghost of a lobster fisherman in the dining room, but that might have been happy hour talking. Time warp? Definitely. You’ll forget what day it is by noon. Which, honestly, is pretty great.

The "Oceanfront Paradise" bit... is that just marketing fluff?

Okay, here's the lowdown: *mostly* true. It's *on* the ocean, and the views? Absolutely breathtaking. I mean, seriously, I spent a solid hour just staring at the water, watching the sailboats glide by. It's that distracting. Paradise? Depends on your definition. Think "rustic". Some rooms are right on the water, with a view that'll make you weep with joy. Others… well, let's just say they offer a "peek" of the ocean. And the "beach" isn’t exactly white sand and turquoise water. More like rocks, seaweed, and the occasional interesting seashell. But hey, you get bragging rights about being *technically* oceanfront. And that's something. Remember to pack sturdy shoes; flip-flops are basically a death wish down there. Found that out the hard way after twisting my ankle on the rocks one morning, and I'm pretty sure I yelped like a newborn puppy at the time, too. Not my finest moment, but the view still made it worth it somehow.

What are the rooms like? Are they clean?

Ah, the rooms. Okay, so "clean" is a *very* subjective term at Colonial Gables. Let's say "clean enough". They're definitely not sterile. Think cozy, a little aged, and possibly featuring furniture that looks suspiciously like it was salvaged from, well, the ocean floor. I stayed in the "Captain's Quarters" once. Absolutely gorgeous view! But the shower... the shower only had *one* temperature: freezing. I nearly lost a toe (a dramatic exaggeration, I admit). Also, there may or may not have been a rogue spider lurking in the corner. But hey, you're there for the experience, right? Pack bug spray. Trust me on this. And maybe a space heater. You’ll thank me later, especially if your bathroom is as glacial as mine was.

What's the food situation? I'm picturing microwaved lobster rolls in a paper bag.

Alright, let's talk grub. The dining room is... a unique experience. The lobster rolls aren't microwaved, thank goodness, but the menu is classic Maine fare. Think fresh seafood, clam chowder that'll warm your soul, and blueberry pie that'll make you weep with joy. The service? Let’s just say it's... casual. You might have to flag down a waitress a few times, but they're all super friendly. And the view from the dining room? Spectacular! I remember one time, I was halfway through a ridiculously delicious piece of haddock, when I looked up and saw a pod of dolphins playing in the bay. Magical! Don’t expect gourmet; expect heart. And maybe a few sea shanties from the other guests. Seriously, it's that kind of place. It’s an experience, not just a meal.

Is there anything to DO at Colonial Gables besides stare at the ocean and eat pie?

Well, it *is* a pretty good place to just stare at the ocean. But if you're the active type... there are some options. You can stroll along the shore (watch out for those rocks!), explore the nearby town of Belfast (charming!), or go on a whale watching tour (HIGHLY recommended, even if you’re prone to seasickness, because the whales are incredible). They also have a tiny little library, which is perfect for a rainy afternoon. And in the evenings, you could sit by the firepit and swap stories, or maybe even sing a few sea shanties. (Don't judge me; everyone does it). Just be prepared to embrace the slow pace of life. And maybe pack a book. Or three. Because you *will* have downtime. Embrace it. It's part of the charm.

Alright, the REAL question: should *I* go?

Look, if you're looking for a polished, cookie-cutter vacation, Colonial Gables probably isn't for you. If you crave pristine, sterile perfection... steer clear. But if you're seeking an authentic, slightly quirky, and utterly charming experience, with stunning views and a dose of Maine magic... then YES. Absolutely, a thousand times yes! It's the kind of place that sticks with you. My first time there? I was skeptical, I’ll admit. I'd been dreaming of a luxurious spa vacation. But I left with a heart full of memories – the taste of fresh lobster, the smell of the sea air, and the feeling of pure, unadulterated relaxation. Imperfections? Absolutely. Would I go back, despite the spider, the chilly shower, and the slightly eccentric decor? In a heartbeat. It's a little rough around the edges, but that's part of its charm. It's a hidden gem, for sure, but a hidden gem you have to be open to experiencing. If it sounds even remotely intriguing to you, book it. Seriously. Just... bring bug spray. And sturdy shoes. And maybe a good book.

What's the wifi situation? 'Cause, you know, I'm addicted to the internet.

Hahaha. The wifi. Oh, the wifi. It's... *present*. Sometimes. Okay, most of the time, it’s about as reliable as a politician’s promise. Don't expect to stream anything. Plan on unplugging. Which, honestly? Might be a *good* thing. Embrace digital detox. Read a book. Talk to a human being. Seriously, the lack of constant connectivity is probably part of the charm. I spent a whole week there once without checking my email. It was glorious. Like, actually *glorious*. I felt like a different person. Okay, maybe not *different*, but definitely more relaxed. So, yeah, pack your patience. And maybe a good book. Or three... you know, just in case.
